Sacramento a surfer's mecca?

Well, yes.  Though the nearest surfable ocean is a couple hours away,
the music and style caught on big time.  Local surf bands dominated
shows in the East Sacramento halls (presented mostly by Gary Shiro or
Dick Levanton).  The Beach Boys' biggest town was Sacramento,
thanks in large part to local teen promoter Fred Vail.
